Need help - Band Uniform or Riding Outfit - Possibly 50s?

Hello everyone,

First thanks to all the members, I find all the information here so informative and useful. What a great community.

Nadine and I have come into this item that we are not sure if it is a Marching Band Uniform or a Riding Outfit, which we think is 50s... We were hoping for some insight, and feedback?

Label says "Peacock Sportswear - Styled by Martin" - from what I have been able to figure out, Peacock was a custom sportswear company in Toronto in the 50s and onward.

It is quite small, waist size on the pants (thought they are adjustable) is 26 inches!

This item is forest green with tan chest piece.

The top has 7 buttons (4 functional) double breasted chest opening. There are covered buttons at the cuffs (same fabric as garment) as well it has a zippered pocket on the sleeve with nice gold tone zippers with round pulls.

The size also has a zippered opening at the bottom with lightning zippers.

The pants have a zippered opening at the side and zippered pockets with the same zippers as the arm pocket. The pants are seemingly adjustable, and have an adjustable belt.

The pants also have stirrups at the bottom.

Thoughts, and insights appreciated?

Thanks!

hello and welcome scott and nadine!

i think it's actually a forties ski ensemble. the silhouette is similar to the outfits shown here

its a great set - love the detailing on the shirt.

my keyboard is waterlogged so im using a broken one. thus the lack of cas and the letter that comes after "o"

Another vote for ski outfit, although I'll put it into the early '50s. It's very stylish.

Susan, hope your keyboard dries out okay - you might need that letter after "o".

It's not very warm looking for a ski outfit - it looks to be in gabardine? I know the stirrup pants point towards a skiing outfit, but could it be anything else?

The only thing I can add is that the ring pull zippers do lend themselves to an activity where you are wearing gloves to facilitate opening pockets.

Good point Melanie, and I do have a gabardine ski outfit in the collection (its a little more obvious because it has a matching hood, and the label says 'ski' on it!
