I bought this black and gold jacket with a silk trim today from a charity shop and i'm trying to work out which era it comes from.

The label inside says size 22M and then underneath RA 8207. There is also a dry clean only label.

The jacket comes with a silk belt a gold coloured clasp with gold etching.

Anyone have any ideas on the age of this item.

Many thanks
Alice

Hi Alice,

First, if you haven't read this post, it offers a lot of information and resources

About your jacket, I can't tell much from your photo - the lighting washes it out a bit and your hair is covering the lapels and shoulders. Can you get a clearer full length shot? Plus some closeup photos of details like the labels, the belt and buckle, the fabric? What does the inside look like? Lined? Shoulder pads? serged seams?

Hi Maggie,

Thanks for coming back to me.

I have uploaded the below photos to try and give you a better idea.

main label - very faded. Says 'size 22 m and RA 2807'

Tie on the inside left of the jacket. There is a small black loop on the right hand side, which this can be tied into. This made me think it might be a very fancy house coat as this kind of tie is the sort you get in a dressing gown.

Yes, I agree that it could be a dressing gown - and I think the belt is a replacement. Is it for a man or a woman? I would have thought man but the sleeves don't look too long on your model.

This is a hard one to date on the available information but mostly from the dry cleaning label, I will put into the '60s or '70s. Originally it would have had a plain black sash I think.

Hello Nicole,

Thanks for your help on this . It is me in the first picture and as you can see the sleeves are quite short on me and only just come to my wrists . This makes me think it is for a woman rather than a man. I was also thinking that the tie inside being on the left indicates it is for a woman.

It is interesting that you think the belt is not the original one. It makes it hard to date items when pieces have been added later.

Thanks again for replying to my post.

Alice
