Need help dating a dress please

I have a dress I’m struggling to date .it is black wool crepe with shoulder pads and hip rolls plus a vintage lightening metal zipper
No overlocking or zigzag no pinking so it’s an enigma

Is there padding in the hips, or are the “rolls” as you call them, created from draping? I’m thinking it is a 40s dress made for an older woman with older aesthetics.

I had thought 40’s but I’m confused by the hip pads . They’re like smaller fatter shoulder pads stitched into the waist seam which is an odd details for 1940’s . I know the use of zips in dresses was late 30’s really so it may be right.
Perhaps the lady had no hips , we shall never know I suppose .

I did have it down as 40’s until I saw the hip pads as the shoulder line is very 40’s and the fabric really. thanks for the response

I have had a 30s satin charmuese ball gown with hip pads. It is an odd feature, and I’ve only seen it once with 30s 40s. As that was a ball gown, and very tiny, I think it was for debutante or very formal event where a dance is a show off moment.

Yes this is probably a dance/cocktail dress as it’s floor length with sleeves finished to a point . Not exactly dance fabric but it was wartime . it’s interesting but nice to have my views reinforced
