Thank you. Any idea what kind of fabric? It kind of feels like a synthetic of some kind but I can't be sure.

Is the fabric a knitted or woven one? It looks from here like a wool knit bonded to a synthetic backing. But, really, in a photo it's hard to tell. If that's what it is, I would place it later into the 50s. I have a very large number of 50s & early 60s dresses and suits in what looks to be the same or similar fabric, and the 50s ones are latter 50s. I have not personally seen a wool knit like what I think yours is much earlier than that....

And, btw, it's a lovely dress!

No, it's a woven fabric. It does feel like a rayon or blend.

Thank you so much for all your help, everyone!

This is from the early 1950's c 1951-52 and is a good example of a daytime dress which "doubled-up" as a coat-dress. Fashionable bracelet length sleeves and small velvet collar. Black was a predominant colour with emerging fabric blends and this looks like a wool mix.

Has the hem been been taken up?

It calls for a hat, gloves and matching shoes. Very nice.

I agree with the vertugarde that the hem looks like it's been taken up a bit - if you sneak a look under the stitches you might be able to see the original hem folded underneath.

I love coat dresses! I think the collar has been altered too - originally it would have been pointier and it looks like someone has "taken it in" a bit - see how it's lopsided? Dresses with pointy cuffs usually have pointy collars too.
