Hello,

Could you please help me date this purse? Also, do you have any idea what this type of leather is?

Hi,

That style of bag was popular from the late Victorian era to the early 1920's. My guess is yours is Edwardian, 1900-1910. It could be mid 'Teens era also. Some of these were made from sheepskin as it is softer than cowhide. In my old catalogs they do not always identify the type of leather, but it looks to have been pressed to imitate elephant hide or other animal hide. Of course, it could be the real thing, not pressed. I like it!

It isn't soft - very hard. I didn't know that it was popular to imitate elephant hide. Thank you so much for your interesting and informative comment!

Hi,

Mary, that reminded me that I have a man's large suitcase with that exact same "boarded" impressed pattern that is on that purse. My suitcase is from circa 1910 - 1915 and is lined in green silk moire'. The leather on mine is not hard, however it is still soft and supple.
