hi all,
i just registered and this is my 1st post. i sell vintage clothes on ebay. i am a novice and am always trying to educate myself in all things vintage. i have been casually collecting for about 16 years and have been selling for 2. this dress has me stumped. is it 40s? it is made out of a sheer rayon (probably) and the print is typical of the period. it is lined with an acetate type material. it has a metal zipper but zips up the back. the length also makes me think it might be 40s. it looks home made, no tags. any info you can share with me will be much appreciated. please let me know if you need any more info/pics. thanks!

best,
jennifer

I'd say this dress is from the 1970's and is what used to be known as a 'granny-print' dress. Don't be thrown by metal zippers especially if the dress is home-made. They were commonly used. It might be viscose rayon or a voile. The lining may be triacetate.

Looking at the construction of the dress is helpful. A good way of learning about vintage dresses is by collecting original patterns. You can often tell the age of a dress by the way it was sewn so turn it inside out and have a good look at the seams , the stitching and the bust darts. If there are any other closures like a hook and eye they can help date the dress.
