Need Help Dating Fan

Hello
I know nothing about fans! This one is fuchsia marabou feathers with celluloid sticks. No markings. It is 18 1/2 by 11 inches when unfolded. Any idea of age? Thanks!

Firstly - are you sure it's celluloid, and not a modern plastic? The only ones I've seen like that are fairly modern.

It feels like celluloid. Is there a test I can do on it to make sure?

It's reading as plastic to me as well. I suspect this is 1980s Chinese import.

I hate to say it, but they look plastic and recent to me as well as do the plumes. Cream celluloid ages to a different color of cream than this,and often has a grain effect that was done to imitate ivory.

Hi,

It is a pretty red, but I do agree it is fairly recent. I still see fans similar to this is the tourist shops in Chinatown, or the local import shops etc. Plastic for sure, and the "marabou" turkey feathers are a sign of an inexpensive fan made for show/costume/tourist trade.

Ostrich feathers are what most fans collectors look for, as far as feathered fans. Marabou is not actively sought after unless it is Victorian or earlier.

hi, l have two, a fuschia and a taupe and the ostrich is flatter and so luxurious....
the maribou and shade of the pink is too garish for the correct period...
