Need help dating this chiffon scarf / shawl... Possibly 1930s?

Hi there,

I'm looking for help dating this large chiffon scarf / shawl. It came to me as part of a collection with a mix of clothing and linens, most dating from circa the 1940s - 1950s. My best guess is that it dates from around the '30s but I don't know a whole lot about scarves and would love some help! It has no maker's label / signature. The edges look like they are hand-stitched (not rolled). The photos were taken in bright sunshine and the colours are slightly more muted in real life!

Thanks very much in advance! I have more photos if you need to see them :-)

Elly can you lay it out flat and take a photo please? also what size is it? I must say my first impression is 1970s, due the colours and style of print with those definite lines, my experience of 30s florals is that the prints are generally a bit more abstract/blurred.
It would also be good to see the hem and how it is finished. It sounds home made.

Hi Melanie,

Thanks for your reply. It's pretty large - 39.5" x 42"! I'll try to take a full photo today and one of the edges. I was wondering about the outline of the print... I was having a hard time finding anything similar online. There is a sort of border that runs through the print too... It would make sense if it dates from the 70s, given the 30s influence on many 1970s pieces! I assumed it was older as the collection included a lovely 40s crepe blouse. The fabric is also really fine quality, which made me think it might be pre-60s too!

Will try to upload more photos...

Elly

Here are some more photos of the edge stitching, a corner of the scarf and some full-length shots... I'm afraid that it's not very easy to take a shot of the full scarf where I am today... Hopefully this will help though! Thanks so much for your help!

Thank you very much, Hollis and Melanie! You've both been really helpful. As you can tell(!), I'm not very well informed on scarves and wanted to be sure of the era! It's good to know about the stitching. I'll know to look out for that in the future.
