The corset has metal hardware and corsett1.jpg is a soft pink color.corset2.jpg The corset is stained and the metal has rusted. Any tips on caring for this item to prevent further deterioration will also be appreciated. The corset has 2 single stays on each side of the openings and and 4 double stays spaced around each side of the corset. The label "C Hands for comfort Health and Style" is sewn in the garment. This is one of several vintage clotting items found in my Mothers home after she passed away. I will be posting a few additional items and appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you, Rebecca

HI Rebecca. Can you post a photo of the label for us? that would help with the dating.
At first look though, its likely to be 1950s or a little earlier.

HI Rebecca, thanks for the label pic- this looks more like 40s to me and the lining looks like cotton - but at the end of the day, forgive me but what decade was your mother born in ? . That will give you a guide to when she was wearing this corset. So if she was born in the 20's or 30s it would possibly date this one to 1940's to 50's. Otherwise it might be later etc..
The trouble with these types of corsets- and I have had many in this style in my stock- is that they don't really change much between the 40's to 60s but the fabric definitely does, as do the garter fittings (rubber versus plastic) and any elastic panels, or inserts.
The garters are quite long, this might help us better work out the date. The fact that it proudly states'' health and Style'' seems to indicate an earlier period to me than later.
Hope this may help a little :)
Cheers Gayle

My Mother was born in 1919. She was always very petite and this would have been to big for her

. Her Mother died in 1954 so it could possible have been hers or my Mother's Aunt. The Aunt died in 1926. My Grandmother was bedridden for the last 5-6 years of her life so she would not have worn something like this during those years.
I have included close up pictures of the inside of the front panel as well as the outside of the front panel. Perhaps this will help. Thank you.

Hi Rebecca, Thanks for the extra info and photos.
Based on this I think you could go with late 1930s to mid 1940s with dating. The length from waist to hem is right for this period, prior to this corsets were designed to fit higher on the body towards the bust.
Have you had a look at our Lingerie Resource?. You can see other examples of corsets there, and lots of other vintage lingerie.

Let me know fi I can help any further,
Cheers
Gayle.

Thank you so much for your help. It is really interesting exploring fashion history. I did find the resource and found it helpful. It is wonderful to have such a great resource and network of people interested in fashion history. Rebecca

I agree with Gayle's dating - late '30s to mid '40s. I have a '50s corset which shares some characteristics but is more modern than yours. You can see it here.

If you provide measurements fully laced up it will help too - eg, the hourglass shape dominated in the early 1900s with an "S" bend, but the '20s corsets don't show much difference between bust-waist-hips. The '30s ones have wider waists to bust, and the '40s ones have more of an hourglass again.
