I acquired this beauty last week. Not sure of the date. The inside is leather and the maker is JR Florida. The scwne makes me think older but the size and frame style (14" x 12"!) is throwing me off a bit. Im guessing 60s? I dont want to underprice it as it is really gorgeous and Im not sure of the needlework either. Any insight would be most helpful.

TIA! :)

Someone had a very similar handbag recently - and so did someone else - I think they went for '60s on it, and I'm quite happy with that dating.

It's adorable! I think someone was trying to find out if it was based on a 18th century painting, but it doesn't look familiar to me.

Well heres a macro photo of the needlework. What do you think?

Nice, big photo but it's hard to see - do you have one in focus?

Basically, we're looking to see if it's woven (like a tapestry fabric) or tiny stitches.

These seem to have been mass-produced so that makes me lean more towards tapestry fabric, as there's an awful lot of work in doing that entire handbag in petit point.

I'll try and post one tomorrow. Im not getting much light since its evening and I am not setup at the moment. Will check back..thank u! :)

After thinking about it, I agree with Nicole - it does seem most likely that a commercially made handbag in the 60s would be tapestry rather than hand done petit point.

Also, to my eye the closeup appears to be machine woven rather than hand stitched needlework.

It's really gorgeous and should do well for you - I love the rich vivid colors.

These were made of a tapestry fabric. I would agree with early 60s on it.

I don't know if this would have been based on this artist's work but it is slightly similar in style and composition to a painter named Jean-Honore Fragonard.
He painted many very romantic scenes of couples back around 1750 - 1800.
