hello all,
i came across this beautiful slip at a yard sale in culver city, ca, a couple of weeks ago. is it as old as i'm hoping it is? thanks to everyone for your expert advice!

It looks like it's a Victorian or Edwardian style but is too short to be either so I'm thinking it might be one of the reproduction styles they did in the '70s or perhaps even '80s.

Some questions:
- is it pure cotton or a cotton poyester?
- is the lace nylon?
- the buttonhole looks hand stitched - is the rest of the petticoat hand or machine sewn?
- what sort of material is the button made of?

I agree with Nicole. Knowing the materials would really tell the tale.

Maybe it was for a very short person, or it could have been for a young teen just before she was old enough to lower her skirts to the ground. Or it could be WWIish when skirts got shorter but women were still wearing petticoats.

the material is definitely cotton. i don't think the lace is nylon. as for the button....?? it is very smooth with a pearly opalescence to it. it is mostly machine sewn, but there is some hand stitching on it here and there. the piece was completely ivory with age when i found it, but thankfully it all soaked out. i was wondering (hoping!) that maybe it had been for a younger girl as it isn't full length. it is truly a beautiful piece.

I agree - petticoat for a youngish girl, maybe up to 14/15 years old ca 1900 - 1915 or so. The buttonhole appears handsewn which is a good indicator of age as well.
