So, today I picked up this embroidered cream piano shawl with crochet/fringe around the edges. The fabric feels like silk. I haven't run across a lot of shawls, so I'd love some help dating it. I've attached a few pics, and if you need more info, let me know!

That is lovely, and looks to be in good condition. I personally would not refer to it a a piano shawl, as it does not look large enough or heavy enough to fall into that category. As these were in style for so many decades, it can be difficult to date them, especially from a photo. From the size of yours, and the length of the fringes, I would place it early to mid 20th century and possibly made for the tourist trade.

Barbara, thanks for the info! It has a few small scattered holes, but otherwise it's in great condition. Anyone have cleaning recommendations?

Those white on white shawls like yours were made in Canton and are often referred to as 'Canton shawls'. Whatever you do DON'T wash them as the fringe will get all knotted.

I agree with Jonathan, especially about not washing them - yours looks like it's already been laundered, see how crushed the silk is and the fringing messy? If you give it a good, gentle pressing you should be able to improve it. Dry clean only for these, but I just give them a good airing (not too windy, mind) outside to freshen up.
