AAARRRGGGHHH! I need some help, quickly, or I'm doomed... Well, I guess maybe not, but could be if I don't get this figured out fast. My web site is down because I'm switching hosting services, which I thought would be a piece of cake. BUT.... my new hosting service does not have ANY instructions on working with MS Publisher files, which is what my site is created in. And when I bought my site, it was already set up with everything, and I never had to publish files "from scratch." Looks like I need to download an FTP program, as the host's FTP publishing tool is supposedly "easy" to use, but isn't. I had to go on another hosting service's website for instructions on how to save off Publisher files to an ftp site as HTML... I'm not a total doofus when it comes to stuff like this, but I'm feeling like one at this moment!

So, I know there are a lot of free FTP programs out there. Does anyone have one they use and love, use and hate, etc.? The hosting services recommends SmartFTP or FileZilla, but when I checked out SmartFTP, it seems people are having trouble with their Publisher files using that, too.

I don't get it--MS Pubisher is SO easy to use, yet it seems like a lot of the hosting sites either are geared for FrontPage (still!), Dreamweaver, or want you to use their own proprietary web builder. But a LOT of people use Pulisher.... You'd think they'd make it easier to upload from that application....

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Try fetch for FTP. Are your pages HTML?

Any hosts Upload FTP programs suck. You can upload one at a time.

Some services offer to set up website for their own clients so they have their own set up which is not compatible with everyones files. This causes havoc

I create pages in HTML and find out that I have to call the host for me to upload my files. They are not used to people having their files. So if Fetch does not work call the server and explain what you are trying to do.

This is a glitch I come across with some hosts. I big pain in the butt!!!!! I deal with multiple site and host and this drives me nuts!

Thanks, Chris! At least I know now that it's just not me! You can't upload Publisher files in their native file format, but there's a "save to" tool that you use to simultaneously save to your FTP site and convert to HTML (you change the suffix). But, the files are getting "lost" and it is not easy to update the links because the directory is screwy--you can't "find" the entire file name to copy and link to. I'm sure I'm not making a lot of sense, but if you were sitting at my 'puter, you'd get what I was talking about. I was successful with my home (index) page, but cannot get my other pages to go "live," even after I "think" I've done the conversion & upload process right, and the pages appear as uploaded in my directory at the hosting service.

In Publisher, there is a direct "save as" function that supposedly lets you converto to HTML web pages, and you can then log into the hosting service and just "drag & drop" the pages once you convert them. The page shows, but not the images. I tried saving as both a standard Web page, and as a single-file Web page, but neither worked right.

I did call the service yesterday, when I first started out trying to transfer all the pages, and the guy I talked to was helpful to a point. But that was before I got into the nitty gritty--I'll have to call them today again....
