Hi,

I'm thinking of buying this fur coat from a consignment store & need help identifying the type of fur.
Also if anyone has any tips or suggestions on what I should look for when purchasing a vintage fur that would be great.

Hi there, This is a pretty coat. It is not as highly valued as some fur types but it is a more durable fur that can be worn around town. It is raccoon fur.
When you are looking for furs to buy you want to run your fingers through the base of the furs to feel for splits in the skin as well as misssing fur or matted fur. You also want to feel under the armpits for holes, check the opening edges, and the cuff edges for fur loss. Making sure the fur is not dried out, the coats feel flexible, and there is no yellowing in the fur is important too.
Check the inside as well to make sure there are no tears in the lining, no major spotting, or other damage. Minor spotting is generally ok as it is not seen on the outside when worn.
Good luck and if you need more help just post and ask away. :)

Thanks for you insightful help furwise.
I'm going to take a look at the coat tomorrow & your tips on what to look for will definitely help me. I was wondering if you would be able to give me a ballpark figure on how much I should expect to spend on a coat like this especially since it's not considered as high value as say a mink coat.

You're welcome. Glad I could help. Different furs have considerably different values and there are many factors that go into determining the value of anything you have so we aren't able to help you assess value. What you can do though is go to our fur resource here, check out some of the different fur types, and then look at recent sold listings on eBay of some. That may give you an idea of what certain fur types have been selling for recently.

Here's the link to our fur resource;

Thanks, the eBay suggestion really helped. I'm such a newbie at this and need all the help I can get. Would you date the coat 70s or 80s?
