I am working on researching this unidentified article of clothing. It appears to be a late 1870s-early 1880s jacket, but I am not entirely sure. It has boning along the seams on the inside. No pockets or labels. Fastened by 10 hook and eye closures that appear to be sewn in under the boning. The black lace around the collar was hand-sewn in. The rest appears to be machine-sewn.

Any information on how this jacket would be worn and the time period will be helpful! This jacket will be conserved and given new life. I have attached some pictures. In the second image is tissue paper hanging from the front, and the last image is of the white part of the bodice.

This looks to me to be 1889 - early 1890s bodice. The shorter bodice length and construction, plus the upper arm emphasis of that very soft melon sleeve lead me that era. I am not seeing 1870s or either 1880s bustle eras at all. It's very pretty, but not super fashionable so it could well be a bit later. I bet it would have had a matching skirt.

Does the mesh fabric cover the midriff of the bodice as well, or is that a plain fabric? and if it is, is it silk or cotton?

Thank you so much! This really helps. The mesh fabric does not cover the midriff. It stops at the edge and only covers the white fabric. The midriff has more of a silk feel to it. I'm new to this, so I apologize if this isn't helpful! I am going to revisit it today to see if I can get a better idea of the fabric. :)
