I purchased these year's ago from a dealer who told me this were very old dating from the turn of the century. I originally believed these to be decals. Under a loupe I have discovered a missing "stone" or piece of stone that would have made up the flowers at the neckline of this woman's head. The metal, I am sure is silver, is cut away and woman in Edwardian dress and head pieces decorate each of the 4 surfaces. If you run your fingers over the surface of this -it feels like a decal. But when you view where this has been damaged - this is definitely set into the metal. Any idea if I am guessing the right time period. Any idea on how I would find out more about these? I have looked through all the books I have and don't see much, if anything about cuff links at all. Any help, research information or ideas would be much appreciated.

Hello,

Those are beautiful! They date from the mid 1920s, circa 1923 to 1925, judging by the women's head gear and hats. From the photos they look hand painted but it is difficult to tell for sure from the photo.

Quite wonderful and unique.

I thought they were painted also, but there is almost stone work on these? I originally thought this was a decal, but it is definitely indented into the metal. Do you know of any good books that might have information on cuff links.
Thanks for the response. I too, think these are quite spectacular - just wish I knew more about them. That is what is fun about collecting. I learn something new every day.

How lovely! And I agree with Barbara that the comely ladies pictured look early 20s.

Is it possible the cuff links are enamelled, and that what seems like a missing stone is actually a chip? Some enamelling techniques are indeed set into the metal, into a cut design. Here is a glossary of the various techniques:

Sounds like yours could be basse taille:

I will look at read about the techniques you are suggesting here and see if I can figure out how this was made. Now that I know it is not a decal!
Thanks for your help. If I have other questions after I research this I will add to this thread.
