I have this black dress. It looks very old but I need your help.
Here are some details: the dress is hand sewn (most of it) and machine sewn. It has closures snaps in front (under the metalic buttons). At wrists it has also snaps. Can you help me dating this dress? Thank you very much.

Is it rayon? It looks like rayon from the way the light bounces off of it but its hard to tell. I suspect its an old lady's dress from the early 30s because of those buttons and the material. It might be c. 1912ish but that would be impossible if its made of rayon and it doesn't look quite right for then - although the buttons might have been added later

I am think 1930s as well , probably homemade. I just finished looking at some Doris Ullman and Dorothea Lange photos of poor people in Appalachia and the Dirt Bowl in the 30s and this dress, while a much dressier fabric, certainly looked of a piece with those.

30s is so oft associated with the glamour gal, satiny and slinky cuts...dowdy comes into every era, though-we can't all be Jean Harlow!

Not sure about the belt, although it certainly looks like something would be wrapped around to cover that seam.

Satin could be rayon, its the weave, made of different textiles. Its likely a rayon satin, and I think 30s as well....hard to picture women NOT looking glamorous since those are the images we are used to! I think while its modest, its certainly a more luxurious looking textile with that sheen to it....if its a larger size overall, I'd clip it a bit and add a black satin ribbon to act as a sash, I bet its got some glam in it!
