Need help with a vintage coat.. cool story!

Hey guys! I was wondering if you could all help me date and possible track down a little bit of history about a coat that came into my possession in late 2008.

I was in a vintage store in November poking around and checking out all the usual vintage things I like to collect when I saw a beautiful, lovely vintage coat. My winter coat was falling apart most distressingly and I was freezing about 50% of the time, haha.. Being a bigger girl I told myself a few times before I even tried it on that it wouldn't fit me, but sure enough, when I pulled it off the hanger it fit PERFECTLY. Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants Perfect. Haha. Then, I told myself that a perfect jacket like this had to be at least hundreds of dollars.

It was EIGHT dollars. I thought for sure there must be some mistake, but no.. my ex boyfriend bought me the jacket as a Christmas present for only 8.00. I still can't believe my luck, as it's in absolutely flawless condition (minus a tiny patch on the collar that's less than a few millimeters each way of what looks like wear).

This jacket is in absolutely FLAWLESS condition. It appears to have been worn at the most once or twice, and is definitely handmade. (The tailor did a really lovely trick where they sewed the buttonholes with the right side of the fabric facing each other, sewed holes, then flipped it rightside out and sewed it on that side too, negating the need for a buttonhole stitch. :)) Even the tags are in perfect order!

Because of the style, my guess is that this coat is anywhere between 1940's to 1960's. I'd like to try to nail that down a little better, along with what kind of fur it has and if you guys have a better guess at what kind of fabric it is. :) Any help would be DEFINITELY APPRECIATED! I'd love to find out more about this coat!

The tag says, on one side:

“By 429830
National Coat and Suit Industry
Recovery Board”

and on the other side:

“Intl. Ladies Garment Workers Union”

I'm thinking late 50s/early 60s, but can't see that Union label properly.

Trying to decipher, I think the label is the one with AFL-CIO across the middle? Re label resource (look under I for ILGWU) they were used between 1955-63.

Lovely coat and what a bargain...some things are meant to be!

my guess,,,

lol wool/cashmere mix,
late 50s (because of the buttons and sleeve shape) I have a green 50s coat alsmost identical... and
Fox fur colar? it is super soft like bunny fur or kinda soft with the longer hairs a little stiffer? but wither way I think fox.

and yes that the 1955-63 label,,, but I thought late 50s before I even go to the label.

i am thinking about the fox.. and I have no clue when it comes to furs so I looked up what is used in clothing and this is the list I got..

fox
wolf
rabbit
mink
beaver
ermine
otter
sable
raccoon
coyote
chinchilla
seal
domestic cat
raccoon dog
domestic dog
civet cat
badger
lynx

i guess thats my next project.. creat a fur identification guide since I cant find a good one on the internet... unless someone else can save me the trouble lol

there is a good fur resource right here on the VFG.

That is a mink collar and the body is wool or a wool blend.
I love coats and have a ton but here in so. CA I don't get much of a chance to wear em.

The buttons are called bound buttonholes and were used a great deal in coats and suits through the 1950s and 1960s.
You may lalso see some hooks at the edge of the fur collar. When fastened, these will make the collar a full around the neckline.

Thank you guys so much for your help.. I can't believe I didn't even think of a burn test. *Hits self in head* I'll try to squeak some fiber out of a hidden hem.

The fur is soft, but not tooooo soft.. like coarser than chinchilla. I work at a mall and I'm pretty sure Macys has a furrier so I think I'm going to go have them take a look at it, as it seems kind of coarse for mink.

Does anyone have an estimated value for a coat like this?
