Need help with French vintage Wool Coat 1800-1830

I live in Chicago and very close friend of mine was a movie actress in Hollywood in the 70's and 80's. She did receive a Oscar nomination. She is a francophile. Back in the 1970's she went to France and purchased this wool coat with silk lining and feathers for $5000.00. It is estimated to be from the early 1800's and is mint condition. She asked me to help her find a place to sell this. Can you guys recommend where I would go, or who I would call to try to sell this for her?

Thanks so much.

You might check vintage websites that carry pieces older than the 1940s.....I know personally I'd be interested, I'm sure others here would be too. I can be reached at [email protected] and may be able to help with some ideas.

Photo of French Wool/Silk Coat

Here is a photo, I tried to post it before but I think it was too large. I am trying again in this post.

What size does the photo have to be?

What size does the photo have to be? I resized it to 352k and attached it properly using "browse" to the file and when I went to preview the reply it did not attach.

Do you have a close-up of the bodice? pic of the lining? I can't quite tell how old it is, but I am quite sure its not pre 1880 and I have to say it looks very theatrical - like it's a stage or film costume.

I don't have any more pictures. I am in Chicago and the coat is in California. I can have my friend take more pics and she can send them to me. Can you tell what the date might be? Again, thank you for helping me.

I have to agree with Jonathan based on the photo as to the date being 1880s or after. This is a very different market and value than 1800 - 1830.

As to value, without handling it in person, it really can't be assessed. Your friend will need to have to appraised in her area where it can be seen. If it has a Paris label, that will make a huge difference as to value.

If it is a theatrical costume, that affect the value inversely.

Once you/she have a value in mind, it will be easier to proceed.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and informative reply. I will call her to today to discuss where we go from here. BTW - my daughters name is Hollister and we call her "Hollis". I just don't meet many Hollis's!

Hello,

I agree that from the photos, it looks to be late 1800's... circa 1880-1890s, and it does look rather a theatrical costume or altered garment. The feathers (which seem odd for a coat) appear to be some sort of fowl, (or clipped ostrich) can you identify the feathers at all? Is there a label or marking anywhere or evidence of a label having been removed? I agree it does not have the look of an early 19th century garment.

What a great and active forum. Thank you to everyone who replied to my post. The information I gained is very useful. I am going to call my friend today to figure out where to go from here.

Is there anyone who could appraise this that is in the San Francisco area?
