Hello Ladies,

First of all thank you for taking time to read this post made on behalf of my daughter! She has a military ball coming she will be attending with her boyfriend who is in the high school Junior ROTC program. Being a spouse of retired Navy sailor I get formal ball; however, this ball is a masquerade ball!

She has a definite vintage flare in her daily life and formals is just icing on the cake for her. She found a flapper style dress that is lovely but what can be done to make I more formal, and go along with the masquerade theme? Or do you think we should just find something else? This dress would still be wonderfully used when her and her bo go swing dancing. She was thinking about putting this beadwork "shawl"(?) over it. flapper.jpgspark pull over.jpg.

All ideas are defiantly welcome and I can do alterations including bead work if that could make It more formal.

because I like.jpgHer newest daily wear dress acquired, Going into the ball2.png Last years ball dress. As you can see her daily wear is dressy compared to most teens, heck what am I a saying dressy compared to most people including me! So her formal level not easily found and when we do find her "style" rarely at a reasonable price. So any help would be awesome.

Thanks again for helping,

Christal

Hi Christal, I think the red dress is lovely, though I can't tell how long it is, I assume it's knee length or shorter? I think all the dressing up can be done with accessories.
You can either go with something to cover up a little more, such as the capelet you found, or a similar bolero to the one she wore last year (perhaps in black or gold/silver).
Alternatively, as it is masquerade, I'd be tempted to go with full length satin gloves -over the elbow length minimum, or if you can get them opera length- halfway up the upper arm.
To go with this, a diamante necklace - a choker, if it suits her, would fit well.
Does she have her mask yet? This will probably determine what colour accessories she wears, as ideally the mask being the focus would tie it all in.

Since it's masquerade, I agree with Melanie about the diamante necklace and opera gloves ( white or black). She could even consider a small tiara, depending on the height of her mask.
Having put masks on singers, I suggest she use the type on a stick that she can hold up to her face when she wants. Doesn't mess up the hair with a tie, or the makeup or irritate the eyes with incorrect eye holes.

I think the red dress looks lovely and formal with a vintage twist! The capelet would look lovely over the top I think, or like others have said, accompanied with a bolero. I would suggest she try it and see how it looks? Also, I think if she accompanied it with a nice ornate mask on a stick(?) and some pearls, along with, as others before me have said, some long length gloves, I think she would look wonderful! The mask and gloves could easily be found (for cheap!) on ebay?
I found a photo online of a 1920s style masquerade ball which looks formal to me.
I think she should go for it!
Please keep us updated with what she decides! I'd love to see!

As a "dressy teenager", I can sympathize that it can be difficult to find something that feels truly formal when daily attire consists of a dress and heels. I do think, though, that the red dress is lovely and could be dressed up with the proper accessories as others have said. To me, a masquerade ball is about drama. This could be achieved through 20s- style, vampy makeup (if she wears it), interesting formal shoes, a complementing layer on top (such as the capelet pictured, or even a dark vintage fur/faux fur wrap), and, of course, a spectacular mask. Hair could be done in a twenties-inspired style, or in some other way that is atypical of her daily wear and be adorned with sparkly pins or even a headpiece. If she wishes to wear a mask that is not on a stick, I have seen some beautiful Venetian masks that tie on with ribbon (I expect these could be found online). I hope you find this helpful :)
