Need to date Sailors Unifrom and Lady

Hi - I am wondering if you can help. The caption on this photograph is "Cecil and me at Edna's wedding"

I know who the lady is. Not Cecil...but the point of dating this is...the clothing worn by the lady , and the identification of the Sailors Uniform. This would be a guide to the Wedding year. B & W photos don't give the colour of the dress...I think black was never worn to weddings...thus, the frock colour doesn't come in to it.

Can someone help.

The hat looks pretty darn 20s to me...what is she holding?

Have you thought about asking on the Military board on ebay?

Here's my guess.

I think they look too "natural" for photos of the 1920's. People in photos from that time are usually in stiff formal poses.

:camera:

Because of the uniform, it might even be during WWII, and the lady may be wearing an older outfit and hat.

Or I could be completely wrong.

I can't help with the uniform but her outfit looks conservative but fashionable for about 1931 - the hem has dropped but the dress still has a lot of features of the 1920s, including the cloche hat, although its not as deep as a 20s hat would be. It might possibly even be 1932, but 1931 looks closest to me.

The uniform looks very much like a late 1920s US Naval Officers coat I researched except for those odd cuff buttons across the sleeve. That should be a band of gold braid for insignia for US Coast Guard, Merchant Marines or Navy.

for a more detailed look at the clothing, is it possible for you to edit the picture and crop, to create a closer view
I would think the upper portion of the peops would help

Hi - your replies are marvellous and food for thought. I am going to see what I can do with the photograph. I tried one angle and the picture became blurred and blockly.

Bear with me a bit

Hi - I've enlarged and cropped the bottom of the photo...does this help? From poor oral history the wedding could have been in the UK or Ceylon. If Vintage Ceylon, it too would have had British overtones in the uniform. There appears to be no association in the family with US of A

Thanks for help
Lucy

The wedding almost certainly was not in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) as the the uniform would have been "whites" (tropical) and the woman in the photo would also probably be wearing an outfit appropriate for the climate.

Actually the man looks relatively young and with no insignia that I can see could be a training cadet.

sorry I can't help - all my lilitary books are USA

But googling "British Naval Uniforms Insignia" might help

there are 4 main features that I notice to this uniform... buttons on the sleeves (very uncommon!) no rank or insigna on the sleeve (even more uncommon, i believe the buttons or pins? on the sleeve are the rank here? but I've never seen this before) , # of buttons on blazer (appears to be three but could be four hidden) and the shape of the lapel....

That being said I looked online for about 3 hours at uniforms ranging from 1900-1940 for UK ceylon austria and usa.. just in case

I only found one that came close and I think its a dead match...but your personal photo is probably a little clearer ... the lapel shape is what I am curious to see if it matches,, the one posted here is too blurry for me to confirm... I found the picture in a 1920's search but the photo was dated 1945.... does not mean your guy is 1940's... who knows how long this unifrom was in use.. and i believe I found it under the UK navy....?? I will go back and check... but here is the photo.
