Needed: fancy but flawed dress for a Derby Day party

My neighbor is having her 2nd annual Derby Day party in May (of course!), and I'm looking for a fancy vintage dress to wear. However, it can have flaws (as long as it's still wearable!), as this is sort of a "costume" party where we all dress like the old-money rich who go to the Derby and sip their mint juleps in the boxes. So, I'm needing something inexpensive, as this will be the only time I'll likely ever wear it! Needs to be about a modern 14 or 16 (or XL). Would love something floaty and/or with a floral print that I can wear with an outrageously decorated big-brimmed hat and perhaps a long silk scarf. Thanks!

Hi Anne,

Do you have a specific era or style in mind? I have a Nelly Don dress, probably early 60s, very floaty, big shawl collar in a yellow floral print. Not sure about the size but its not small. I could see it with a big hat and white gloves for sure, but I dont know if I would call it fancy. Its a nice afternoon type dress & suitable for sipping mint juleps. Its wearable but has a few flaws.

Brenda, I love Nelly Don dresses, and they usually flatter we "full-figured" women! And 60's would be about right as far as the era I'm looking for. I have gloves, too, and a proper purse!

If you could check the size, if it's big enough, I'd love to see a couple of shots! Thanks!

Linda, Queenie, thanks, too! I would look at anything 50s or 60s, maybe into the early 70s (like a goddess-style thingy with a capelet or something).

I got caught short-handed last year, but this year I plan on being dressed to the "nines," including a bog floppy hat and maybe a parasol!

Go, Anne! (It sounds like a great time!)

I don't have anything floaty, but I do have a 60s lime and turquoise floral sheath and matching 3/4 sleeve coat ensemble that says "Mrs Thurston Howell the III" (don't know if that's the vibe you're hoping for, of course!) I've just checked my description, and it's comparable to a modern 16. It's nicely homesewn and in fine shape except that, after my *%$*ing dry cleaner got his hands on it, the green dye bled and muddied the print slightly (mostly on the coat, if I remember). I'd be thrilled to give this a good home and would sell at cost.

Let me know if you'd like me to send a picture!

Carrie, sure I'll take a look at her, though I no longer look as "smashing" in a sheath as I used to!!!! LOL! That look would work, though! Thanks!

Anne-

Here is the Nelly Don dress. Big scalloped collar with full skirt, lemon drop buttons for center front closure, and original belt. Check your U2U for more info.
