I know this request is awfully broad but could you please send me some suggestions. I am going to outline each decade mentioning important designers of that decade, cultural significance, have examples of clothes though actual items or pictures. Is there something you can think of that I may be a little obscure but significant that I should include.

How old are the children being taught?

I think that would make a difference.
Add something about what children wore at the different times in history. i think they would be surprised about that. and also they might be surprised about whatever decade most of their parents or grandparents were young in. so that would depend on the age of the children. i bet they would be shocked/embarrassed/pleasantly surprised that mom or grandma wore go-go boots. I know it is not academic designers, but if you find something that they can connect with, then go from there

When I've gone to elementary schools for "Victorian Days", I bring children's stuff so kid's can see what other kids wore "back then".
It seems to hold their attention especially when the boys realize that they would have worn a dress until the age of 5-6!
If you can get kid's things, that seems to get them going.

For elementary school level, I put a booklet together for each child - made up of line drawings of the different fashions/styles - which they can use as a guide and also for colouring.

Lei is right - they love to see what they would have worn in those days - particularly the boys! ;-)
