HI...

I found this hat a few months ago, and I recently started to look up its label. It reads "Park Avenue by Stetson" I understand that Stetson, itself, is very well known Millinery label, but had no luck with info on this particular label. And as for dating, I'm thinking 1950's?
Any information will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

The earliest ad for a Stetson "Park Lane" hat I found was from 1935 and the most recent from 1957, though both were for men's hats. Stetson did make women's hats as far back as the early 20th century.

Do you have a photo of the underside of the hat, particularly the inside of the crown? Also, what are the measurements?

I'm sure one of our hat experts will be along to help pinpoint date on your wonderful hat, but I'm if it might be earlier than 50s...

Hi...
Thanks for replying.
I'm not too sure determining whether its synthetic or natural , but the straw itself has a shine to it, therefore I'm guessing its synthetic. I uploaded a few more photos in hopes that it'll help determine its age. Not too sure if the hat pin originally came with the hat, but there was one attached to it, when I found it.

I am with Barbara with the age, shape has a "Dior New Look " feel to it.
Just thinking aloud , if you made a straw hat and not by a farmer in a field would you not seal it with a varnish or something ?
I did a very quick look and open to offers on this one slightly out of my comfort zone

They saying synthetic straw is made from polypropylene and polyethylene which looking at the time line
polypropylene seams to have gone into production in 1957 & polyethylene developed earlier also when into production in the late 50's .
There is some talk about using paper to make straw .

Does anyone else have any idea in regards to the label? I appreciate the info I have been given so far, but any further info with the label would be great. For example did Stetson do a limited women's line for just a short period of time? All that I seem to find is cowboy hats, when I research online.

Hi,

As mentioned above, Stetson produced a line of women's hats for a long time over many decades. From memory, at least the late 1920s or very early 1930s as you can find ads from that time for Stetson lady's hats. Their ladies hats were most popular in the 1930s and 1940s and were usually very sporty or casual and modeled after mens hat styles but with a feminine flair. Your hat is rather dressy and feminine for a Stetson line. I personally do not have any information handy about when they used "Park Lane" on their women's hat label.

It is difficult to determine the type of straw and age of hat from just a photo. We can only give you our best estimate, based on the information you have provided. The straw looks to a natural straw braid which was treated/ glazed during its manufacture and is probably Swiss in origin. It could be a synthetic plastic straw (unlikely) or a cellulose based straw (very possible). Synthetic straws have been made since 1900 and of a wide variety of materials. It is not a polypropylene straw or paper straw.

From your photos, the style is very much early 1950s. The label also has a 1950s look to it, just in general.

It is a beautiful hat, and the drape effect is especially nice.
