Needlework Shawl - Dating help?

Hello!

Came across this pretty shawl the other day. The owner told me she remembers her mother saying she wore it a lot when she was young and the owner is in her 70s. She also mentioned it being from Italy.

Does anyone recognize the style of the needlework?

Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hi,

This is an example of a type of Filet Crochet, but done with silk or rayon floss on a net ground and on an oversized scale.

While it could be a shawl or a garment, I don't think it is. It is a decorative item for the home. This was very popular in the early 1920's and I have several examples of table scarves, hangings, lamp covers, centerpieces, mantle scarves, etc done in this exact style and method. I have never seen a garment made of this type of work, (except for trimming) but of course it may be a home made thing.

I actually used to wear my 1920's table throw that was made just like this, and wore it as a scarf, so...there you go!

It is very pretty!

Hi B!

Thanks for all the info! It may very well be hand-made. I've never heard of this kind of needlework - very neat. I think I would probably wear it as a shawl, too. :)
