Etsy is a really good source for vintage shoes. Due to vintage sizes, I'd recommend measuring a pair of your own shoes that fit you really well and compare them to the measurements provided by the seller. If the inside shoe measurement isn't provided, contact the seller and ask. :)

Have you checked the VFG member sites on the home page? Click on the box in the top right-hand corner to find a list of all VFG trade members. I'm sure you'll find a pair of 40's shoes amongst them.

Alternatively, can you provide a photo of the type of shoe you're looking for? If you can do that and provide your exact shoe size, perhaps a member will read this who has what you're looking for. You never know.

Louise's advice is excellent! If you know your foot measurements and generally the style/color that you want, finding 40's shoes shouldn't be that difficult. As Louise suggests, if you post a photo of shoes similar to what you have in mind, likely somebody here would have a pair or know somebody who does. Many of us have stock that is not listed anywhere, and might have just what you need!

If you can provide more information, even if without a photo (style, heel type, etc.), you can post to the "Most Wanted" Thread on this board. You'll probably have luck that way.
