Hello vintage gurus. Recently came across this absolutely gorgeous wool dress with satin collar & satin covered diamond studs scattered across bodice, back & top of skirt. It closes with a heavy metal zip at the front. Pockets at hips. Gusset armpits. Beautifully made, the tag says "Neiman Marcus Sports Shop" - being a Texan, I am very familiar with the big NM. But was wondering if someone had info on the Sports Shop & what era it encompassed?

I've done a bit of Google sleuthing & looks like the Sports Shop was around as early as the 1930s - I found an ad from 1937 & a mention that Stanley Marcus was placed in charge of the Sports Shop department around 1936.

I'm also fairly sure the dress is 50s - would you say early or late? I am not very familiar with the 50s, it's never been my favorite but I am loving this dress! Would love to lock down the era so I can contribute the tag!

It's a lovely wool jersey type fabric. The front zipper is what throws me, though! Never seen that except for in house dresses, and this is most definitely not a house dress! Could it be some sort of fancy-pants, "apres-ski at the mountain lodge for cocktails" type sportswear? ;)

I am familiar with this fabric, nice and weighty, flows nicely on the body. I would go with early 50s on it but maybe it's even a little older than that and might even be later 40s.

I also have had a dress with these same sort of silk squares too, the dress I had though was more of a fitted style and it was black wool and definitely was 50s.

It would make sense that it is early 50s, maybe even late 40s - I bought it with a black, definitely 1940s rayon dress that belonged to the same original owner. Thank you so much for your help!
