Nifty Hat - but is it 30s or 40s?

I really like this hat - it's wacky enough to have a lot of appeal.

I was thinking mid 1940s, but found an old tag on it that said 30s. Now that sort of thing makes me think twice, since 30s hats are fewer around here, and 40s have been doing well with the WWII crowd lately.

Or is it a 1938 - 42 cusper?

Cute isn't it?

Oh I love the hat! Let me know when you list it..I have a repeat buyer who pays big bucks for hats and anything else from the late 30's and 40's!

sure Queen - it should go up early next week.

that's if I get everything measured tomorrow, get the measures into the descriptions, then actually list on Sunday ( it's Mother's day)and Monday, and ebay dosen't misbehave and..............

well you know how it goes.

My feeling is that the hats with the wide bands at back are earlier. Usually the little tilted 30's hats aren't quite so tall, but they are around 1939, so I would guess 1939-1941ish. After 1941 most of the loops are elastic, or a simple band of felt or straw, not so large.

Thank you Jonathan - I have wondered if the type of back band was significant, and it makes sense that the look would start with coordinated made bands, then shifted to cheaper and easier to manufacture elastic.

Hollis, I love this hat. I agree, late 30s, early 40s. I have a hat book with hats like this. See if I can find.<p>Also love your mannequin head!!
