I think I've told this story before, that I was walking in Beverly Hills about 10 years ago wearing this vintage dress. I happened to pass Mr. Blackwell on the street. He looked at my outfit for a long moment and then smiled and nodded at me. :headbang:

I've sold a few Mr. Blackwells over the years. They are always super feminine. Here's one I have right now on the site. The rhinestone choker is attached to the neckline of the dress with strands of matching rhinestones.

Ookoo, that's a great story! And a great dress too.

There's a long list of clickable Fug Favorites along the left hand side. It's a fun way to realize that it's better to have taste without money than money without taste.
;)

I was watching "The View" this morning and they talked about his passing. I was surprised that Barbara Walters said something like he was a nothing designer - not her exact words, but pretty close. She said he was only known for his "List" and not his clothing......

I have a few Mr Blackwell dresses in inventory and just listed one the other day on ebay. The dress that is currently on ebay is definitely unique with its sleeve design!

I heard similar descriptions on our local newscast this morning, that he was a "failed actor and fashion designer" who only became famous for his Worst Dressed List.

Well, he was hardly a failure, living in a mansion in Hancock Park. I used to see him in that neighborhood, when I lived there, in a carriage house apartment, mind you.

He spoke to a group of youngsters, in a psych hospital classroom, in which I once worked. I believe he had some horrendous expeirences as a youth, and had compassion for those who were tormented. He was rather an odd duck, but I always admired his moxie.

Didn't Blackwell do that sequinned black long sleeved mini dress with the huge bold yellow and red flowers on it? I see it pop up on ebay now and again for some huge prices. I know Timeless Vixen sold one last year or so and got something like $400 for it.

Ever since Mr. Blackwell passed away, I've been looking for one of his dresses to commemorate my *brief* encounter with him. (I know that VFG members have some for sale, but none in my size.)

So here is the one I found:

Slouchy, drapey, bat-winged, high-necked, oversize top with miniskirt - it HAS to be 80's, yes?

This label isn't in the Resource:

Yes, I'll keep this one! I like it a lot, although I usually look for more figure-flattering styles.

If no one disagrees with my date estimate (1980's), I'll add the label to the resource thread.

A bit late, but I figured this was the appropriate place to log information on the subject...

Today i met a gentleman who told me that his sister had worked for Mr Blackwell for many years as a pattern maker.
It's not a huge or important revelation, but she told him that Mr Blackwell was a very nice guy but (in low whispered voice...) "he likes boys" :)

Although I, personally, dislike the fact that this phrase is usually uttered using "boys" rather than "men" (as I highly doubt that Mr Blackwell was a pedophile, but merely gay) - I still thought that I should only relay the memory rather than interpret it.

So... there ya go! :icon_dante:

oh Ookoo that is a great story! I love those lists, but normally disagree with his opinions, sounds like he led an interesting life

what a shame, perhaps someone will take over his post

awhile back, just after he passed away, I came across one of his dresses, fabulous fringe but with some moth damage to the wool. I purchased anyway
