I would like to ask you, *~Eli, what are YOUR thoughts on a date for this, and how did you arrive at that, given the research you have done on this, so far??

what would give you hints? the silhouette? (including the length?) the print? the colors? the fabrication? the construction details? serged seams? pinked seams? plain seams? fasteners?

I'm simply suggesting that sometimes thinking of a garment by details helps give you a direction to go in, when it comes to dating a garment ~ hope you find this helpful in your vintage questing ~ :)

Hi Mary and thank you for the reply.

I have been working on my 70s collection this morning and this dress is in that collection, so my guess was 70's based on fabric, pattern and design but the nylon material is unlike any other dress I have encountered, it is more like 70's robe material. I didnt even like it that much until I dropped it on the dress form and "had a moment with it" Still this one seemed as if it could possibly be more modern and I wanted to see if the general consensus was the same as mine without my pre exisiting thoughts. It is in fact one of my first vintage pieces purchased with resale in mind.

I researched the history of nylon material, read the wikipedia as well as read a thesis from a fashion design college that someone had posted about nylon fabric, but still this dress is unusual. It has no lining, seems literally brand new and most nylon dresses I have found from the 70s have at least one snag. So I have done my research... I am not just counting on the people of this forum to do it for me, I promise *smile*. I am in fact sort of a researchaholic, (my dog who has been begging to go out for an hour now, while I do research, can attest to that!)

I have a few more like this... that I believe I know, but am not 100%... I hope it isn't annoying that I post and ask, since I am just gearing up and there are wardrobes full.

Just wait until I get into my 30s - 50s collection... that stuff seems to stump me a lot. I'm leaving that until the end since a great deal of it is untagged and rather daunting. I'm from the 70s so it is a little easier for me to define those.

I literally have hundreds of pieces I have collected that I am going through on the weekends to get photographed, measured, dated and posted, so I may be asking a lot of questions this month *smile* Don't get me started on the 100s of shoes and boots... is there a vintage shoe and boot site? hahaha

Thanks again.. am really happy to have found this site... I use the label guide constantly!

Eli -

Welcome to the VFG Public Forums - there are lots of "researchaholics" here! (Hope you dog has had its walk by now...) I noticed in another of your posts that you mentioned you were concentrating on lighting, but if you can get a bit closer and more in focus on your photos, and mention or show details like type of zipper or construction we can be much more helpful! I thought your "dress" was a nightgown until I saw it has a zipper in the back.

Ok Lynne and thanks I will. I am going to focus on getting good pics of the pieces now that I have the lighting thing almost down... I am bound to post some more later... I will take your advice *smile* and yes. I walked the dog, she barely made it out of the driveway .... but she is much happier now!

Eli, we all love dating garments here, but a small number of photos are no substitute for holding it in your hand - if you can give us some of the information you've discovered (fabric, labels, detailing etc) and especially your guess at a date, it makes it a lot easier for us - and also we don't feel like we're being used as an endless resource! We like to feel as if you're learning from, rather than leaning on the VFG if that makes sense - it's clear from your comment that this is the case, so the more help you can give us the better!

Many fashion styles came back at various times so you need the puzzle pieces to pin it all together. I agree with the others on dating this dress and would date it was early to mid 1970s, the fabric is especially distinctive.
