Octagon (Octagonal) Purses -- all from the 70s?

Hi, I've got one of those prototypical octagonal wooden decoupaged purses. I'd thought they were almost all from the 70s (not that I recall seeing them as a kid). But I'm looking for comps and seeing wildly varied dates. I'm guessing most of those dates are wrong. What say you experts? ; ) I happen to like this particular example -- the golden paint is very nicely done -- but they seem ubiquitous and anonymously/home made, and thus should be very moderately priced, no? Thanks for advice -- Liza

Cute purse, Liza Jane, and I'd agree with 70s as a time period for these decoupage purses. A good way to get a sense of how to price is just to google comparatives (ie "70s decoupage purse", and maybe also a search with "octagonal" in it).

The prices seem to vary a bit--the design, condition, and how the inside is finished probably all play a role. Also, the only "designer" name that I'm aware of in connection with these is Anton Pieck, and those seem to always go a bit higher than the anonymous ones.

Thanks, Carrie. I noticed the same, and found the Anton Pieck thing interesting, as it's another illustrator name I've learned from vintage clothing (the first being Art Nouveau favorite Aubrey Beardsley).

Meanwhile, I've seen a whole lot of these being advertised as 50s, and I was highly suspicious. Guess I was right to doubt ; )!

Mine is nice enough, with some pretty details (I like the gold painted trim), but it's not going into a museum any time soon... so would probably price it somewhere in the mid range, as these things go. ; )

Thanks!
