I ran into THIS when I was googling for something or other. Kind of an odd assortment of anecdotal facts, but some are fun and news to me -

1896 Brooks Brothers introduced button down collars after observing polo players button down their collar points to keep them from flapping during play.


1928 Dec 13, The clip-on tie was designed.

(I would have thought much later...)

1939 Bra makers first started using cup sizes.

I'm still muttering to myself over two strange bits of trivia--that there are salmon-skin bikinis out there, and that Birkenstocks can be traced to an 18th century violinist/composer...

Yes - I wondered about the Birkenstock thing too - I assumed it was a 60's thing... and why did Holland ban orange clothing in 1784?

Dutch royals are the House of Orange; so perhaps it was something akin to the colour purple Jonathan mentioned in his article about only royals being allowed to wear the colour or it was banned completely because the country was under seige????
