Its constructed sort of like those edwardian tea dress with snaps. Iam thinking 40's or 30's on this dress....

I am thinking later than that but very difficult to tell without knowing some details. Do you know what fabric it is? Any tags? Its very pretty.

No tags. Its a light weight silk. Handfinished edges. The silk is a really fine tight weave. Double the weave of a known 40's dress I have....

Isn't this a vietnamese ao dai? These are similar to a chinese cheongham but the deep slit is the differentiating factor. These are worn over silk pants and the deep slits are needed for movement. That would be my thought. I own one myself only in vermillion red and yellow.

Check out the shoudler pad, it is true that many of these type of garments were popular in the late forties, the type of material in shoulder pads may be a key to whether it is late forties Japanese or late sixties Vietnanese and the amount of heavy padding on shoulders points to late forties. The garments like this one that I have come across had matching wide legged pants, both styles were popular from their respective countries during these two time periods. Also the type of closures should give a clue. Does it close with covered buttons, metal hook and eye, invisable zipper, snaps? Is the padding material on shoulders layers of foam (thats what it looks like in pic) if so and closure is button I would go with forties, many silk garment sets became popular in late forties to wear at home or for home entertainment parties
