I just found an old Burberrys man's woven topcoat. The name Burberrys is under the horse/rider logo, similar to our label resource guide for the 1930s. Coat is lined in a plain cloth rather than the Burberrys plaid which came along in the 1920s.

Coat is made in London, England for Lazarus, a store in Columbus Ohio that opened in the 1850s

Sleeves are raglan. And the outside pockets have a "pass through" slits into interior pockets. Buttons and tab under the collar. Some padding in shoulders, but nothing excessive. And two button half belts on sleeves. (i hope this is what they're called)

Are there specific details that I should look for that will help in deciding if this coat is from '30s, '40s. 50s?

Thank you for your help and please let me know if I need more photos or details for you.

this post is receiving a number of "lookers" but no comments. Please feel free to offer suggestions of other sites I could check out.

Gail, thank you for taking the time to respond. I've found a number of wonderful men's vintage suits, jackets shoes and coats. I find very little information in books. I've actually gone to some of the men's vintage clothing shops for help. Looks like I may have to see what ebay can tell me or go pleading again to some online vintage sites.

Thank you Amanda and Barbara. I'm familiar with the Fedora Lounge and will check there. Also thanks for the thoughts on dating the coat in the 1950s. I tried looking through my few resource books and was totally lost. Thanks for the I.D. tips regarding the raglan sleeves and specked fleck tone weave. A 1950s Burberrys coat is still pretty cool.:)

I would also date it as 1950s, due to the style, button holes and top stitching, and wonder if it's been relined? Half linings came in the '50s so if it's original, that also suggests a date of that time - but coat linings are often replaced after they get damaged.

Thanks Nicole for the information regarding popularity of half lining in the 50s - something I didn't know, andwill help me to evaluate coats. At present I'm trying to find out when Burberrys changed their logo from having the Burberrys name below the charger to above the charger or even if there is any significance to that in determining a date.

Yes, I agree with Nicole and I think this is mid - even maybe later 1950's mainly because of the length. This is a classic Burberry overcoat. A very traditional style which hardly changed and was often worn by the racing, hunting, shooting and fishing brigade in Britain - ex-military included. Probably a Donegal tweed. The half-lining looks good to me. Burberry were manufacturing men's coats with raglan sleeves before 1950. Here's an ad from 1948 with information about this;

-and another ad from 1954 showing a Burberry coat similar to yours;

thanks vertugarde, I did an archive search before posting on the VFG, but I was looking much earlier. The ads you found are great. I love it when I can quote some of the old ads when I list an item.
