andi started watching an old film in black and white called the philadelphia (sp) story with audrey hepburn, cary grant and james stewart...

ok apart form the acting in some parts i really injoyed the film and picked up more knowledge of fashion items etc....i havent watched old films in ages.....

do you like watching the old films ot help you with the fashion of the times etc.... which are your favourite old films...

Love watching old black and white films and I find I pay attention to the clothes more now than the story - LOL. Can't say I have a favorite, but Philadelphia is a great one - and it's Catherine Hepburn in those great outfits and one of the first woman (if not the first) in Hollywood to wear pants most of the time off set. Both Hepburns were trend-setters thou.

guilty as charged, in fact often the kids or David will shout out f'abulaous wallpaper mum!' or 'great bag there mum!!' or 'wouldnt you just die for her dress'..all toungue in cheek of course as they really dont GET IT!!! they think l'm a bit mad....DOH..dont say it, think it but dont say it!!

There was a remake of The Philadelphia Story which was called High Society, and starred Grace Kelly.

I asked about everyone's favorite clothes films some time ago on the trade side of our forums, and here is what I have from everyone:

Stage Door
The Stork Club 1945
My Fair Lady
Gangster No 1
Now, Voyager 1942 with Bette Davis
Fashions of 1934 again with Bette Davis
The Women 1939 with fashions by Adrian
The Cook Thief, His Wife And Her Lover
Dark Passage The designer was an assistant at Warner Bros, Bernard Newman, but I think he nailed the look for Lauren Bacall. 40s

Rear Window for Grace Kelly and Edith Head at their best! 50s

How to Steal a Million my favorite of the Hepburn/Givenchy movies, though most of them are good. 60s
The Philadelphia Story 1942 - Kate Hepburn dressed by Adrian
Auntie Mame
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Dark CIty - a sci-fi thriller with interesting melange of 1940s - 1960s clothes
Sweet Charity for some fantastic hippie duds in the number 'Rhythm of Life' and also very edgy evening clothes in the nightclub scene

The Eyes of Laura Mars for high style mid 70s chic

Mahogany for silly and high style mid 70s clothes worn by Diana Ross

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire for great 50s clothes

Room With a View for romanticized Edwardian clothing done well in the 80s.
-The Women ('39 version)
-Mildred Pierce
-Rear Window
-To Catch a Thief
-High Society
The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio - recent film with Julianne Moore. Great depiction of what the everyday housewife wore in the 50's.
- Gentlemen Prefer Blonds (I think it is Travilla who did the gowns and they are to die for)

- Funny Face (great 50s dresses)

- Gilda (of course Rita Hayworth could make even a potato sack look fabulous!)

If anyone is interested in a great early Hollywood book that has the best photos of stars in fabulous dresses and names the costume designer get "Those Glorious Glamour Years" by Margaret J. Bailey. Great photos!

Top Hat
Cleopatra
Thoroughly Modern Millie.
ROLLERBOOGIE
RIFF RANDALL
His Kind of Woman
Designing Woman with Lauren Bacall (Helen Rose clothing)
The Bride Wore Red with Joan Crawford
"Eve's Bayou" with Lynn Whitfield and Samuel L. Jackson
Down with Love
Belle du Jour" from 1967 with Catherine Deneuve. Yves St. Laurent did her wardrobe for this film
"What a Way to Go" for pure over-the-top Edith Head in a star-studded kitschy romp.
"Weekend in Havana"--Which is one of my favorite movies or "The Gangs All Here"--That's where she had the GIANT fruit hat.
Saturday Night Sunday Morning'.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Liz Taylor looked stunning, in fact streetcar named desire and Night of the Iguana had great women and fashion..

Laurel and Hardy :- often set in every day setting so the extras in the back ground are so interesting for me to see what they wearing.

We watch SO many old movies. I got rid of television around four years ago so we rent movies for entertainment.
Just recently we watched Marked Woman with Bette Davis. I think the date was 1937. The costumes were by Orry-Kelly. The gowns were fantastic, slinky and glamorous.
Another film I saw recently that had wonderful costumes was Indiscreet with Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant 1958 (or there abouts) Again great gowns. The costume designer was Quintino.
Both movies were wonderful for costume gazing and pretty entertaining.
