Hi everyone,

I've inherited an old St Michaels cap. I was told that it belonged to my great grandad however despite searching online i can't be sure of what year/decade it was from. I can't imagine it's of much value, but to me it's something that's been in the family for a long time so would be interesting to know what it's lived through.

Any information greatly appreciated

Hi there, what a great piece to have from your great granddad! The St. Michaels brand from 1950-1980 had an italicized script with the ® under the text

In 1980 they switched to a cleaner, more modern font with the ® above, this one matches yours. You can read more about their history here on our St. Michael resource page.

It also bears the Woolmark logo which was created in 1964, and you can read more about it here, in our label resource.
I believe your hat falls into the 1980s era.

Hi,
Thank you very much for the information. Although mine is itilicized, the R trademark is above and to the right of the 'L' even though the text is in red.
Also, in your first example, the St Michael writing is running at an angle, but mine is horizontal within the box.

Is this just a variant of your first example, or is it likely older?

Thanks again
Barry

Yours is like the second example, the colors do not matter.

The Universal Product Code (1212 365 on your label) appeared as black on a yellow background after 1984, so that helps narrow the date down a bit more. From the code on the label, I believe the hat dates to October 1985.
Thanks for that - I was trying to remember that information! Can you remind me how to interpret those numbers? I seem to remember the 5 at the end indicates 1985, but where are you getting October from?

I think I have some notes on this on my home computer, but I’m not at home :)

Hi Ruth, from my understanding, it's the 3 numbers (105) that are before the T on the label in the last photo
