Old Tablecloth, but how old?

Hi, would appreciate any thoughts on how old this might be. It was my great grandmothers (1854-1935) from Germany. I have no other info and no family alive that would know more. She could have bought it or it could have been handed down. 2 sides are selvage, 2 sides hemmed and hand sewn. Thanks!

I can say that I believe is dobby weave fabric. Dobby weave was manual until 1843, when a mechanical dobby loom was invented. That's not to say that manual weaving wasn't done after that date. I'm trying to judge if the fabric looks like manual or mechanical dobby, but I don't have experience in judging that.

Thanks, I was at a dead end but that gives me a little more to research.
The hand stitching on each side was done very nicely, but whoever did the stitching didn’t follow the lines in the fabric…the sides are quite crooked. Obviously not a professional seamstress! Not a problem to me, just makes it unique.

Hi,

That is a lovely textile. Is it seamed down the middle? The 54" width would indicate a 20th century textile unless it was woven on an old loom and pieced together in 2 pieces which was common.

Thanks. No seam down the middle, thanks for the info!

My mother purchased a cloth very similar in the 1960s. We used it frequently throughout my childhood. I've always associated these cloths with the mid-20th century. The colorway makes me think of that time, too.
Sorry, I know that doesn't jive with your grandmother's years.
However, it is possible that my mother purchased hers used, rather than new. She did like going to a local secondhand store. (I still remember the store name: Carousel. It was a large, multi-roomed, disorganized, and packed place. Digging necessary!)
