Older (underdress?) that I need help with!

I'm not listing this, it was a 'gift' ages ago from a friend of my Dad who was clearing out an attic.

I'd always assumed it was 19th century but I am so clueless that as I had the spotlights/mannequin out i may as well take a few quick snaps (sorry I haven't ironed it). Am not going to state my dating guess out loud though as i will most likely be wrong!

I *think* it is a teenage garment that has been rather crudely altered ('v' insert at the CB of the bodice) to accomodate a growing bosom - also please bear in mind this is combined with the fact that my mannequin is a gangly old thing and those sleeves should be full length! I also think it is handstitched in the main, very possibly all but am not 100%.

GRRR! I can only manage thumbnails again. PLEASE CLICK!

Thank you! I'm keeping it so it's not hugely important but would just really like to be sure of a date for my own satisfaction :)

THat is an odd one... The whitework embroidery on the bodice looks late 19th century or even Edwardian but the cutwork looks older. It is imitating a Regency silhouette but its not that old, the sleeve construction and the whitework embroidery is wrong for something that early. I assume it exhibits some sewing machine seams? My guess is that it is a maternity morning dress from the 1880s or early 1890s and the inspiration could be the Kate Greenaway style Regency revival that you do find right around then.

I think the only other option is something from about 1912ish but the cutwork is too heavy for that period, as is the cotton. By 1912 you get lighter weight cottons and linens and flimsy filmy laces instead.
