? on fur and Kover-zip

I was preparing this listing and was putting "gently used" - because I did not think it was vintage. I also did not know the fur, but I did not want to put the effort in for something that was not vintage and I was going to basically give it away. Then I looked at the zip and it is quite unusual, it zips with a cloth cover - hence, the name Kover-zip and they don't seem to be around anymore; so perhaps this is vintage, but when????? All info I have found with items that have the the zip date to around WWII.

Does anyone have info on Kover-zip?

And now of course I'm more curious about the fur. It is similar in appearance to a racoon coat I once had - the middle part anyway - but it is much, much denser. Anyone want to hazard a guess?

As always, your help is mucho appreciated!

Thanks

Wow, from the front it looks like a no-contest 40s muff, but the back looks so modern! (great pics, btw)

Is the back quilted satin?

The only time I've had one of those zips in in some decidedly 50s items, and I love them, they glide like they were on day 1 from the factory.

I suck at naming furs, so I can't say there. It has so many undertones, I'd say it's def one of the wilder critters in the fur industry.

Thanks, Jenn! Yes it is quilted satin. The great condition is why I decided it had to be newer and the zipper does glide like buttah. The teeth are metal, like old zippers, but the glider and o-ring are some sort of metal and pristine. If only someone had put a label...

I wouldn't really consider excellent condition as odd on something like this. Really, how often would you get to use it? Perhaps it was so special that it was stored lovingly for years.

I don't know, maybe I'm off my rocker here, but I have a muff of similar size and fur that I need to list (not summer fare at all!) that I am sure of the provenance on, and it's 40s.

I was about to say it looks like it's buried! My poor stock room needs a visit from my mother. "Clean your room!"

I did find it (miracle) under 3 cubic yards of crinolines and my memory has served me well. It is black satin backed with a pucker/smooth/pucker line finish and a brass tab kover style zip (works better than the one on my new jeans!) but with no pull ring. Has a satin loop in the same place as yours.

I sell some things for a frisky 80 year old gal, former bombshell babe. This was her mother's piece. Mother bought some nice stuff in her older years (great 50s and 60s furs), probably to make up for the lean years when her kids were growing and the wars were on. I like Mother.
This piece, though, I remember my gal saying it was from the 40s, though, for what that's worth.

Mine is darn near shot for hide. There are splits, I think it's coon, as it's brown with lots of variation and black striping. Not like yours, though. Could yours be fox, maybe?
Anyway, I was going to put this up, like right about now, to catch the Dickens reenactors and carriage ride and sleigh bells sorts.

I'm so glad you reminded me!

If yours isn't genuine vintage, then someone is duplicating these darn near dead on.

What a neat piece. I would have been completely confused about the date as well. Maybe you could put 40's/50's in the title and explain that you are not sure if it is late 40's or early 50's. The fur looks a bit like a silver-tipped fox fur I sold last fall. I can see why you might think it is raccoon though. The color variations are quite similar. I think of fox as been a bit softer.
Good luck,
Carrie

Thanks so much Jenn & Carrie!!!

Jenn it sounds like our spaces are quite similar :BAGUSE: And I'm glad you found yours.

Thanks for the fur suggestions, but it's not soft enough for fox... Funny how I know what it's not. I'm going to check out badger - don't know why, but hey it's worth a shot.

Likely either badger or dyed raccoon. I dont know how popular badger was, or how common.....but I understand raccoon was dyed back then even, so its a good possibility. Ang
