One more How do you determine the date on a SWIRL?

I am asking because Linda's Swirl was dated to the late 50's, how did ya'll determine that?

My Swirl started out as deadstock, but it was horribly yellowed from age and storage so I decided to give it a soak in that vintage wash that was recommended, it worked really great and brightened up the fabric considerably!

Thank god I had already taken the pictures and have one of the paper tag which is now a crumbly mass of thread.

So, how old is mine?
It has a piped rounded neckline, a seamed waist with gathering down into the skirt and notches in the short little cap like sleeves.

There's that black button again!

Tori, you pretty much have to go by the length of the dress and the design of the fabric. Swirl had been making this one button wrap dress from at least the early 50s, and possibly before. I think the label in your dress started in 1954, but again, that's not positive. And it was used into the mid or late 60s. Hopefully when I do the research for the Swirl workshop, I'll have a better idea of the dating of these.

Yours looks late 50s to me. The length is still below the knee, and the fabric has that late 50s look too. Love the roses!

Talking of which, Lizzie, I found an ad in a 1950 Vogue (unfortunately not in my hands - in a library) which advertises Swirls with *that* typical typesetted Swirl logo, but plus the 'Sanforized cotton' feature, that I think we've seen on a slightly earlier Swirl that was auctioned recently. That Swirl had this label with the sanforized legend added. I'm thinking that label is actually the slightly older version of this one. Don't really know how that affects the Ty-Wrap one...

The 1950 ad had a New York address attached, and I'm still trying to get this ad copied (requires remote nagging of DB - actually, I think I'll try sneaking in and taking a digital pic on the desk).
