I recently picked up this very neat purse ...

But a closer look - it needs help. I’m wondering if the knitted part of the purse was added later, or is kind of a kit? (Apologies for fast photos). See how that metal rod goes along the inside to hold the cloth in place? On the end of the rods there’s a place to screw on a finished piece. Two of them are missing, so I have to come up with something. Ideas? Would a craft store carry something?

Also, this is an odd, but fun dress. It has a big old metal zipper up the back and no label. The raffia is shiny and almost plasticy. How would you describe this dress?

And lastly - some neat ties. I NEVER find older ties!) I particularly like the last one, which is hand painted and more narrow than the others - 40’s? Many thanks for any help.

I can't help on the first two items BUT those ties are fabulous.

At first look they all appear 40's to me, I have a large collection of these and remember the days when they would pull over 100.00 each, I don't know if they are still appreciated like they were then, I have not searched for them in a long time. I've even stopping looking for them at the sales, I don't think I have found one in 2-3 years.

The hand painted ones are my favorite, they did some really cool graphics, novelty pictures etc.

I just went and took a look on Ebay, some are bringing 50.00-60.00 bucks.

However without the right keywords/timing it looks like they are going much cheaper....I wish I had not looked at your post cause I feel a shopping spree coming on...OH NO! somebody stop me!

The LAST thing I need is more ties to just pack away, pull out and fondle every now and then re-pack. I need to get a handle on my hoarding! But then again, I do love them sooooooo.

Amanda, love that dress! I would describe it as a "floral crocheted raffia..."

And I LOVE those ties! Yikes--I have too many already, or I'd be making you an offer on 'em! Maybe I still will :horny: They all look 40s or maybe a couple into the early 50s to me. I've always done well with hand-painted ones on Ruby Lane, but I think you have 2 or 3 in that batch that are worth more than the hand-painted one (at least IMHO!).

Can't help much with the bag, but I think a hardware store might have screw-on caps for the rods, if you want a kind of funky look!

Amanda--the purse is from an early 60s kit (and I LOVE it!). I had one with a crewel-embroidered linen body and a nut missing off one end, just like yours. I just took the purse to my local hardware store and tried various sizes till I found one that was a match both color- and size-wise (the frame on mine was goldtone).

Re the ties: What a yummy haul! Wow! I never run into ties this early either--best I've done (at estate sales) has been mid-50s. I'd say the red one all the way on the left and the red one with shield motifs are possibly early 50s (due to the designs on them).

One useful general rule of thumb is length--40s ties tend to be a few inches shorter (like 47" or 48", as opposed to 50" or 51" for early 50s ties).

Handpainteds were popular through the 50s. How narrow is that one? could be mid-50s (when ties slimmed down to around 3" or even a bit less...)

On the ties, if they are unlined, they could be wartime, but if they have a lining, they are later (unless they are knit which these are knit because knit ties often didn't have a lining anyways regardless of year). Sometimes the labels also give you a clue. There are some really great labels from back then with some cool images on them. Narrow ties were very big in the early 60s if they are skinny, but I agree that narrower (which would be just "normal width" now) could be mid 50s or later.

Are those tiki faces on that red tie? Sort of near the middle of the bunch. If so, pop VLV on that baby. I am not sure if I would advise selling as a set or individually, but that one will surely go for VLV

The bag could be 1940's. If you could show the lining. The wool/fibre looks a bit fuzzy so if it is a synthetic I would agree it might be later. The ties are all mainly from the 1940's.

II thought 40's or 60s for the bag (lol that's I good I am I'm it's either this or that - big help hey? lol) On looking again I would go with 60s - sweet finds!

Karin - I've been buying vintage clothes for 30 years, and I never stumbled onto ties like that before. They are only lined at the ends. Three of them have kind of a stamped logo on the back - "Mexicali Falls," "Tie Hiti" and "Aztec Masks" - which I gather reflects the print.

And thanks for the help with the dress - late 50's? I love cello straw Italian /floral crochet raffia - you all are great. The dress was never worn.

When I first snagged that purse I assumed by the character of the closure and material that it was 40's ... but indeed, the material does seem to be synthetic and the lining is a more modern print and material. And it does seem to be a kit - so I am off to the hardware store.

If the purse were mine I would go to the craft store and find a few lovely wooden beads and glue them over the protruding metal.

Also, I had a similar dress that I sold on Etsy this summer. It was made in Paris and had a silk lining and a transparent irridescent thread woven in with the raffia. It brought a good profit as I am sure yours will as it is just as lovely.

And I know NOTHING about ties, but those are cool!!
