Oriental/Asian Design Dress - what\'s the date?

Hello everyone!

It's been a while since I've visited. I hope you guys can help me with this lovely dress. It's an Oriental/Asian influence fabric. Metal side zipper. I'm not a pro at any of this stuff yet and I'm not even sure if the fabric is silk or a manmade fiber. If anyone can provide me burn test information I'd greatly appreciate it!!!

My cousin is wearing the dress since she's taller and leaner (and younger...LOL!)

than I am.

Please let me know if you need more images. There are no labels.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

It could be late 50s - I've seen quite a few more Western-styled dresses of that date with this kind of fabric. But wait for more opinions...

Its either rayon or silk. For silk, a burn test should make the fibre curl up like wool or hair and the smell should be like burning hair. For rayon it will burn to ash and smell like burning paper.

This type of brocade and in this colour especially was popular in the late 1940s and early 1950s. You see it on a lot of Asian export dresses and jackets, slippers, and dressing gowns from then. I think they come out of Hong Kong. By the late 1950s the brocades are generally larger patterns and instead of azure blue or Imperial yellow, gold and turquoise are more popular. I have had a lot of garments made from this type of brocade over the years.
