Oscar de la Renta does St. John or was it vice versa

This dress is made of the very distinctive yarn and stitch that St. John calls santana. The label is similar to 80s de la Renta labels on the VFG label resource, but the dress seems more like 70s to me. Now did Oscar copy St. John or did St. John copy Oscar? Like St. John, the edges are not hemmed, but knitted closed. The bodice is like St. Johns of the 60s and 70s. The sleeves are not like any SJ I've ever seen, nor is the neckline.

I think it's 80s or perhaps a cusper. Are there shoulder pads? If yes, I think that brings it into the 80s, but I'd wait to hear from someone more experienced.

No shoulder pads. I guess that's why I thought it looked 70s.

I had one in green it had a belt and a bit of a puff shoulder. I would date it early 80's
