1958 - Joanne Woodward, I remember her saying in an interview that she made her own dress from a pattern and she was late arriving because she was still finishing it an hour before the ceremony started!

That's wonderful, if a little misleading - it makes Meryl Streep's Lanvin look gorgeous...I thought it was awful. (She speaks highly of me.)
