It is with much reluctance and reservation that I consider the possibility of selling this, and wanted some input. (and thought it might not hurt while weighing my options. It has a very moderne deco-y feel and is from the 1930s. very slightly amber with blue. (someone may have the magic word beyond the obvious...candy dish? small covered dish?) ??

I am not really sure how i should classify this..it is not really typical depression glass in my view.

It may not be your typical depression glass but I would be sure to use it in the title.

No new words other than do you think it could possibly be a refrigerator dish?

I have some glass reference books at the office and I will glance through them when I get there today.

I didn't think it was a freezer item. I have a few of those and the size and shape don't seem to be very practical. It sits on a table well, but i would think the topheaviness would make it very tipable. I guys you could eat ice cream out of it if you wanted to, but i was thinking size wise it was more of a candy dish. It looks kinda huge in the photos.

the base is almost 3" wide. It is about 5.5"or 5 and three quarters inches diamater at the widest point

But who knows ...maybe, It is not quite as dark amber as it appears. When things are behind it/lighting makes it slightly more so.

Not much help here, but it looks more like art glass than depression glass to me. Yes, granny's candy dish.

Try the glass & pottery board on eBay for a more specific ID; there are some well-informed cookies over there. Try to bypass the ever increasing back-biting that has been showing up there in recent months. There are still some smart, helpful folks.

Just identify as much as you can in the subject so the right folks will see it.

I looked in my glass books and I think it is a covered candy dish. Other names I saw for similar items were urn or comport (compote).

The closest it looks like in shape is one called "Carribean."

"caribbean". is that a name of a shape of a particular and specific design of dish.

Brenda, i keep forgetting about that, thanks! Maybe i will do so.

Sorta getting off the subject of the style of dish it is......
The brown glass with the blue highlights in the lid reminds me of
my grandmother's dishes-Carnival glass.

They mostly made blue and brown dishes that were shiny like metallic in places when the lights hit it, but they did make a few dishes without the metallic look.

I hope that I could be of some help. Of course I could be wrong. I am in the process of study my grandmother's glassware collection. Have several books on hold at the library about glassware that I am dying to get my hands on.

My mother had a piggy bank out of carnival glass that i remember very very well. Too bad you had to break it or use a knife at the top of the slot to wiggle coins out. She didn't break it though....i think she stil has it full of coins under her bed.

This is a much paler amber than the pictures show, i might have to retake photos. But i know exactly what you mean about taht carnival glass "other colors" that it picks up. I didn't notice that about this one but i will look again outdoors. Thanks Jamie...this gives me another interesting direction to explore

your very welcome.

That's what we are here for, to help each other.
I am glad was I able to help even if it was in a very small way.
My grandmother has alot of different glassware, but carnival was her favorite next to her Avon bottles.
