Hi everyone. I know this is OT, but here's the story; amoungst the many things I have to do or have signed on for (I always spread myself too thin!) I write for a national student publication called the College Times. Anyway I have been asked to write a short piece on things to do in Cardiff for the socialite column, but I have never been there (neither has anyone else on the writing staff). I would like the piece to be interesting and rather than just rehash the vist Wales website include a few things off the beaten track, like vintage stores or antique markets and I thought who better to ask than yourselves. So if anyone has been to Cardiff or is familiar with it what interesting things are there to do there?

I sincerely wish I could say I knew Cardiff from personal experience. *sigh.* You may recall this thread, as our poster Edwin (ellienedwin) has a shop in Cardiff. Maybe he would be of some help if you sent him a U2U?

I might email him directly, as he is busy with live fairs right now and I don't think checks in everyday

I know about Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California LOL

Hi!

I live in Weston-super-Mare, which is directly across the Bristol Channel from Cardiff. We've been there quite a few times, and it is a beautiful city.
It might be best to wait to hear from Edwin, but if you need anything else, just ask.

Ahhhh Chris California, how lovely! It's on dull, rainy winter days like this that I am California Dreaming! I have e-mailed Edwin too, so hopefully I will get a few gems to add, might even inspire me to visit Cardiff myself, if I ever found the time.

Louise, all input is welcome, I know nothing about Cardiff so anything you can think of, shops, places to eat etc. will be much appreciated.

My mum's from there but I've only been there once. Didn't enjoy it much though as I was pregnant and was sick all the time. We stayed at the Marriott hotel which was VERY expensive and you didn't even get any breakfast for the price we paid (£100 for one room for one night) so we wouldn't stay there again.
My grandmother always used to go on about Barrie Island and how wonderful it was so you may want to look into Barrie Island.
Cardiff Castle is good too and there is a little shop across the road from the castle where you can buy all welsh stuff like flags. I bought a bunch off stuff there and sent it all over to my mum to remind her of home :)

I don't really know much about anything outside of the city centre, but I can tell you that the city centre is absolutely gorgeous.
There is an area of the centre that is covered in arcades, dating from victorian times. Think wrough iron and glass. You can find all sorts of shops in these arcades, plenty of the typical chain stores, but also lots of unique stores. When I was there last we had my son, who was 2 months, and he seemed to love looking up at all the light streaming through the glass. We also had my in-laws from Norway with us and they thought Cardiff was very beautiful and clean. The centre reminde my mother-in-law of New York City when she was growing up in the 1950's.There is also a pedestrian street, with loads of shops as well.
Cardiff seems to be going through a 'revival' because there was a lot of building work being done. And housing prices are on the way up.
Weather-wise, it is much the same as where I live, in Weston-super-Mare. Not too cold, not too hot. A fair bit of rain. Mild enough winters to allow palm trees to grow!
Let me know if you want any more info. I'll try posting a few pictures.

Sounds like a nice place to visit. Until I saw Anna's photos of the Isle of Wight, I thought folks who said they had palm trees in the UK must have been medicated...now i believe it!

We have a palm tree in our back garden here in Northern Ireland. It is the most hardy thing we have! It was about 10ft tall, blew over in a nasty storm on Boxing Day 1998 and is now just as big again! When we were kids my Dad used to always take pictures of us beside it on Easter Sunday and on first days of school, last days of school etc. I think he was measuring us growing with the tree.

I just want to say too, thanks to everyone for you input. I think I may have quite a good little piece in the making now. That is, if I ever get time to do it properly. I have so much to do at the moment I think I am going to have a break down before it's done!
