OT-Bob Hope Classic Ball

After much thought, I've decided to post this because many people have asked me questions through the years. I'm trying to finish an edit job and will have to post in bits and pieces.

This is the 50th year of the Bob Hope Classic. It's one of the premier golf tournaments and raises lots of money for various charities in the Coachella Valley--the area between Palm Springs and Indio. One of the charities is Eisenhower Medical Center --a non-profit hospital where my husband practices cardiology so we feel a responsibility to support the event and attend the Ball since we don't play golf.

I must admit that it was more fun when I was younger--well the first couple anyway. We're not party people.

Back to the event--there was pre-dinner entertainment with 3 impersonators of Dean Martin (he was fabulous), Frank Sinatra (he was ok), and Sammy Davis, Jr. (he was good). They sang and mimiced the stars. There were a few tables but most had to stand.

All of this took place in a tent with a few heaters; it was a relatively warm evening. There were heavy hor d'oevres --miniature hamburgers, shrimp on sticks, and crab cakes. I ate lots.

Just before dinner was announced there was a fireworks show in tribute to Bob.

More later--dresses, jewels, etc. Claire

I've always wondered what it would be like to go to a fancy event like that. One where no one was wearing crocs or jeans...not that I have anything against them in the right setting (home on my computer  ) but it would be nice to see a whole room of folks who got dolled up.

Would love to see photos! Did the golfers come out for it? I play golf, and would love to once in my life attend one of the big fancy parties associated with a tournament like that.

I've been to lots of big tournaments, but never have had the chance to do the accompanying partying & schmoozing. And, of course, the great thing with the Bob Hope is that it does do a lot for charity.

Quick bits and pieces--
The best vintage was a short A-line leopard coat trimmed with leather. It was stunning. The wearer was at least 75 and looked great!

There were several 70s prints. I wanted to wear my Hanae Mori Op Art with the 1/2" rhinestone on the left boob. Charlie wasn't excited and said I looked like I came from outer space. It would have fit in.

One long sheath was orange with stones--almost like Indian mirror work. All the young women wore very bare tops, halters, mid-riffs showing etc. and some of us pretending to be young did the same. No, no, I didn't show my tummy.

Most older women wore more covered up with long sleeves--well it is winter.

The only golfer I knew who he was was Arnold Palmer; the other major sport celeb was Yogi Berra. Palmer has played in the tournament 47 times and is very supportive of the hospital. Berra has been before so he might play in the amateur portion.

The amateur players buy packets which include golf with celebs and pros and two Ball tickets. This is how they raise lots of money.

More later. C

One of the most unusual tops was white lace and white mink. I only saw it from the back.

The center had horizontal strips of mink interlace into the fabric. The side back was lace. Sorry I didn't have my camera along. It never occurred to me to use my phone. C

Ooh, your Hanae Mori sounds wonderful--you shoulda worn it!

It never occurred to me to use my phone.

LOL! I do the same thing... I just got a phone with a camera in it, and keep forgetting to snap photos when I see something I "think" I want to buy, but want to go home and do some research and/or post it here for questions. All this new-fangled technology, and I have it, but it doesn't help if I forget to use it....

That mink & lace top sounds interesting.
