So who is participating?

I'm so proud of our little town and of Canada in general, as
so many cities and locales have signed up for lights out
tonight between 8 -9 p.m.

It is such a beneficial movement and hopefully will
spur even more people to try and make that
small effort to help the environment.

www.earthhour.org gives information and you can sign up
there, however the site has been so overwhelmed in the last couple of weeks, it is almost impossible to access
it. They were supposed to be adding more servers, but
I am still having trouble.

Here is an article from the MSN.com home page today
which gives some info.

I would have preferred that it was during the summer when you can sit outside and read or something... Sitting in the dark for an hour isn't as much fun... I guess there is always sex - but what do you do with the other 54 minutes? I suppose reading by candlelight...

Have a late candlelight dinner?

Go for a walk and snoop on your neighbours? (that's what I'm going to do :hysterical: )

Have a bath by candlelight?

This was started by Australia who are I guess still in their
summer months. Picking a date worldwide that would
fit everyone makes it a bit hard. Plus, it is more
dramatic to see the pics when things look darker :clapping:

I noticed that too Karen

It's been argued that technically one hour blackout is not
going to make a huge difference, however the fact that
so many people, cities and countries are involved in this
grassroots movement symbolically is incredibly
dramatic.

Shows the power of the media, internet and the people and what can happen when globally we all pull together.

thought google was have a kniption fit...havent heard about this in uk..

That's a neat movie, thanks! The issue is really awareness, and this will help, but frankly there are so many people that just flat don't care.

I'm sitting here with my computer and my lamp, with the flourescent bulb, and that's it. Hubby has his comp and ceiling light with flourescents on. The rest of the house is dark because we're not in those parts. My neighbor's houses will be lit like Christmas within the hour.

I am nosey, and I'm a bit of an Earth & nature freak. When I walk my little one to school on trash day I look to see who recycles and who doesn't. It's disheartening to see both the poor and average and the well-off and highly educated BOTH offending-not recycling! I just don't get it, especially when we have to purchase special trash bags here for a dollar each, but can use any clear recycle bag, which cost about $5 for 60 at Walmart (that's $300 worth of city trash bags!)

I'll be sitting in the dark watching a movie with hubby tonight, cuddled under a blanket with the thermostat set at the usual 58. I'll and keep doing what I do every day to conserve, compost, recycle and reuse. I hope this movement gets more folks in the Earth's corner.

Well said Jenn......I do too! (hope that it makes more people aware).

I turned everything off before 8:00, put the dishes to
soak and then went for a 40 minute walk around the neighbourhood. It was just dusk when I left, but by the time
I got home it was dark. I took a flashlight with me because I hate walking into a dark house. I would say that 70 - 75% of the houses I passed were dark which was really
encouraging to see. On my way back I passed my
83 year old next door neighbour who was out walking too.
We got talking about the blackout of several years ago
and how at that time there weren't even streetlights on
and the stars seemed so bright.

Got home and did my dishes by candlelight......felt almost
like a pioneer! It was great!

sometimes you say the funniest things...boy i needed that laugh...:clapping:

Apparently here in Calgary consumption went up. Can't see how as several of the uber office buildings downtown even went dark!! Must have been regular consumer consumption.

We had a BBQ steak dinner by candlelight with the boys, then played Pictionary, then lit a fire as it was cool last night to be without the furnace. Sat around and talked and read , our blackout was about 2 hrs. long. We felt that 1 hour just wasn't enough for us!!

It was quite fun, I agree...like a pioneer! I would do it once a month!!

I thought about turning the shop lights off but as we shut on Saturday until Tuesday, I really didn't want them to be off for all that time - and if I had to make a special trip to drive back and turn them on, the petrol would out way a small period of fluoros being off.

So we went out to dinner (our Sat night routine) and then home for "computery things". As per normal.

My hubby and I live frugal, environmentally aware lives with no heating or air con, recycle every thing (especially clothes, heh) and walk or cycle as much as possible. It helps that we live in a small 1940s house 5km from the city and eat vegetarian food (I'm almost vegan now). We need a car for the business but we keep it to a minimum. I like to think that we're living a bit like Grandma and Grandad did back in the day, but it's mostly because I like to spend my money on buying all the vintage I want, rather than the things that others consider essentials.

Glad to read that others care about this so much too!

My next project is to start a neighborhood paper recycling campaign. My guy and I take all our non-curbside recycling paper to a center, and want to set up a bin for as many neighbors as are willing to participate. It's small, but again, maybe can raise some awareness.

Maggie, I cannot believe that a city the size of Spokane does not have neighborhood recycling centers!! Good for you for getting that going...Good Luck with your campaign!! I bet you could easily get some corporate sponsors going with you!
