OT - food allergies

Anyone have or have kids who have serious food allergies? I just found out my little guy is allergic to peanuts and eggs. At least we know so we can fully remove any and all from his diet (the house - have to make him some egg free cookies since that's his favorite food :) ) but - wow, I was so hoping it wouldn't be - praying he'll outgrow them, I just had to share that. If any of you know any good egg free recipes I'd love to have them. Thanks :)

Look to Vegan sites... I have a great link to people who e-ail you some great recepes. I was vegan for 8 month to target food allergies... Which for me is gluten and some dairy. With eggs you really have to look when purchasing baked goods ans processed foods

It is difficult but lucky there is Whole Foods and other groceries who have a better selection of egg free things.

It is law here to mark packaing if items have been made in the same place as things being made with peanuts.....LUckily I just had a food client so I was educated on ths point. So read packaging.

There is a carot cake I love to death.....

When I get the link I will get it to you.

I'm allergic to eggs - as Chris said, it can be tricky. I'm also vegetarian and I find it takes more work to avoid eggs that it does to avoid meat as so many vego foods have eggs in them...I dislike the taste so generally avoid eggy dishes but if you really want to eat them, you can get an egg replacer, it's easy to use and that's what I do when I want to make something like pancakes. There are plenty of good vegan cake and biscuit recipes so usually it's not a problem.

Personally I'd be more worried about the peanut allergy: they can be really bad. I hope your son's okay - you might find that there are treatments you can use, I slowly reintroduced egg into my diet so now I can have a little bit (eg a piece of cake) although as I mentioned, I prefer the taste of egg-free stuff.

We've had anut free house since he got his hands on peanut cookie and ended up in the hospital, we're getting an epipen for him, all of the schools and most daycares are nut free now so that's just about educating the people in his life and him when he's older - 10% chance he'll out grow it - 85% with the eggs - they say not to have any at all, and we get him tested in 3 years...

Nicole, I'm not a big egg person myself except for in baking and stuff - I was thinking of using the egg replacer stuff, I'm glad it's easy to use :) - so many foods have eggs in them! It just means less convieniance foods like frozen waffles and stuff, which really's not good for us anyways. I think he's been getting upset tummies from the eggs although he doesn't always break out, so it'll be better for him to completly avoid them now.

Chris, thanks! I hadn't even thought, I've done alot of research in to food allergies and stuff - I thought I had celiacs for a while but I think it was only lactose intolerance - I'll go hunt down some vegan recipes.

Thanks! Still wrapping my head around it, although I was already pretty sure about the nuts, I didn't think for sure with the eggs.

Oh i was screaming crazy for a while. Brown rice wraps are great. I am pretty much off dairy. I feel better. I dont eat much eggs they make me feel sick.

I am still trying to locate the group in brooklyn which has some great reciepes.

There is also a group of people who are anti dairy. My freind and his family are totally dairy free.... There is a book on that too. They see dairy as being like poisen.

I dont buy much at the grocery store....

I really wrestled with the dairy thing a few years ago - I'm still kind of on the fence about it - the rules/laws are different in Canada, I drive by the dairy/meat cows all around here - I see them in the pastures grazing so I don't feel it's too bad. I did reasearch alot about it - Marc will never give up milk, I drink Lactaid latte's and on cerial, cream in my coffee, I think I've pretty much decided that soy is more evil than milk :) but it's always a heated debate with the soy vrs milk conversation.

It'll be differnt, but at least we know right? That's what I keep saying - better to know than not know.

Anyways take care! Thanks again!

I use soy, or orange juice on breakfast cereal. I especially like soy hot chocolates - the slight nutty taste suits it, I find.

I'm lactose intolerant too and would go vegan except that I love cheese. Mmm, gorgonzola....goats cheese.....love them all really.

Nicole

As far as milk goes, I found out that some lactose intolerant people are not actually reacting to the lactose, but the chemicals they put in milk - the hormones and antibiotics that they feed the cows to produce more milk. I never really had a problem with cheese, but couldn't deal with milk or heavy cream at all. After switching to organic I can eat cream. Milk I can have in recipes etc which I could not have before (like things that ask for a few cups of milk). I am still iffy on straight milk. But I have no problem drinking goat's milk, though you really don't see me drinking a glass. I drink chocolate soy milk for calcium.

I have a cousin allergic to peanuts and one who was. The older one (aged 30) actually grew out of it. I think his sensitivity wasn't as severe either. He could be around peanuts, but just couldn't eat them. On the other hand, the younger one (14) cannot go to the roller coaster park because they cook in peanut oil. it is even all the oils in the air. He needs an epipen.

I've always thought peanut allergies would be the hardest next to the gluten allergies. Seems every packaged food has nut warnings, even without nuts in them, such as MM's and packaged muffins and granola bars.
I have heard that peanut-allergic folk should avoid Chinese, as they use a lot of peanut oil.

Best of luck!

Cruel to mention cheese to me.....

Oh I forgot if food is made locally they dont have to disclose about being processed with peanuts and such.... So be careful of things made locally like muffins and cookies made by small shops ad sold to local deli's
