Welcome little Vegas!
But she won't be little for very long...

She is going to be a VERY VERY VERY big girl and will be much larger than the lab (Hollywood aka Holly) my sister and her fiance already are owned by.

My sister just emailed me the photo today.

What a face! My sister has a black lab too, they are a sweet breed. I love puppies! Congratulations!

Vegas is actually a Newfoundland

Her sister, Holly, is the lab. (she'll definitely outweigh Miss Hollywood by at least 30 lbs)

I like labs too. My parents got one while i was in college. He was a sickly pup from the pound that no one expected to live, and he lived 10 years (not long, but much longer than they thought)

I can't imagine if I visit with my two dachshunds. It will be the liliputians in the land of the giants.

Thanks for the compliments! I can't wait to meet her. Hard to believe she is only about 5 weeks old in that picture because of her size. (her head looks bigger than one of my dog's heads and they are 5 and 1 1/2 years old!) She'll probably be at least 120 lbs when she is done growing.

Wow, so cute! I just met a Newfoundland today on the street. She was black and white and came up to my waist. Her person told me that she was only 9 months old. Yikes! Those puppies get huge!

Dad is 150 lbs. (!) Mom is "small" at 110 lbs. My sister is a dog trainer and this is the first dog ever in the family who is not from the pound or a rescue (my family - parents/sis have fostered over 450 rescue dogs - probably more...only a few at a time though not at once!). A gal who does rescue with her rescues Newfoundlands and also breeds them. She is one of the "good" breeders because her first concern is placing rescues and she only breeds the dogs in the best of best the best or health and temper and all the others for the purpose of training them as water rescue dogs. (and no one goes to a home without properly screening)

Vegas ' grandpa is "Josh" who won top dog at Westminster last year. My sister was asked if she would be the handler for one of the puppies to show, and she declined because she wouldn't want to have to worry about keeping a male dog unneutered in case he got out and that is greater concern to her. So they decided to take Vegas instead as a buddy for their lab as she has always wanted a Newfie since she was little. They still might show her, but they think they will spay her and train her for water rescue and to be her "assistant " for dog training classes as planned.

Lindsay (my sis ) was originally going to go into the Police K-9 search and rescue unit, etc, but because of health issues she would not be able to pass the police academy, et al, but is still doing the dog thing :)

This the first Newfie although she is familiar with them in her classes. My sister rescued an Akita a few years ago and that was the closest thing that any of us have had (in size anyway). My parents adopted him and kept him his whole life. He was like a big teddy bear. I am just not prepared for how big she will already be by the time i see her.

My sister just sent me a new photo. Holy moley! She is only 8-9 weeks old and look at the size of her! She is as big as one of my full grown dogs or bigger. I think she looks like a muppett or a floppy toy dog here. She is not going to be a lap dog for very much longer. She has already outgrown her first bed.

oh my!!! That is one BIG dog!!

Sooo cute, too!

My DH keeps buggin' for a dog... but I don't want one yet. They bugged me for another cat and promised to help care for it.. but guess who feeds them and takes out the litter?
Besides.. I'm a big believer in adopting from the pound.. but my DH wants a rott or pit puppy. I'd rather get a certified MUTT that's a couple years old.

Puppies are CUTE, as long as they are somebody else's!!

What about a rott or pit that is already a few years old from a rescue? that way you don't have to deal with the puppy stage...

I can't imagine how much energy my sisters pup has. she will be knocking things over soon i am sure. We adopted our youngest at 6 mos from a rescue and he was a ball of energy and she is a million times bigger than him. My parents had rescued a puppy when i started college, but he was sickly, so i really wasn't expose to the level of puppy energy.

I was disappointed that she didn't get her from a rescue, but i cut her a break because she has rescued and rehabbed tons of dogs-- gosh, i can't even count how many dogs now...but it the numbers are way up there probably over 100. And there are a few she really saved their lives (found in ditches, left for dead, etc). Anyway, Vegas is being trained for a special job instead of just "her wanting a dog" and she wasn't able to find any younger dogs that would be suitable for it over the past few years in rescue. the rescue we support has placed a handful of dogs into being dogs for the deaf, but none she has found has had the aptitude for water rescue.
